Stones of Blood by Maylar Stones of Blood by Maylar
Being away from home these days made a delay in submitting this..."Stones of Blood" is the second of mine "old, magic books" inspired series.
Book is 1.8 cm (0.70 inch) high. Covers are especially interesting, as I did a small experiment to make them look like leather (it is actually a specially coated thick cardboard).
Stones are made of painted glass (I bought them transparent and painted them crimson red), to resemble of rubies...original idea was to use real rubies, but frankly, I currently couldn't afford it, so found this to be nice replacement.
Book is gilded by mix of gold and bronze paint, again using my own method, described before.
I'm very sorry my camera doesn't do justice to the engravings on sides...spirals and curves in reality are much more visible than on these photos, but camera has problem catching it *sigh*
Book has 20 blank, "Earl Grey" dyed pages, which were later exposed to close flame (not burned), so ends turned slightly "yellowish-brown" in try to make them look used.
Making this took me almost three days (with on-off periods), as first coat of gilding had to be completely dry before spirals engraving and then I needed to ad a second coat, which had to be dry too before "gems"...well, you get it.
All in all, hope you like it :)

This is really beautiful! I love the attention to detail in your books, like the smoked edges. It gives this book a feeling of having a long and dangerous history, and it really adds to its magic.

I have a question; how do you dye paper with tea? Do you just sprinkle/douse it and then let it dry?

Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it ^^ Details on these are my passion :)

As for tea dye, let me describe process...well, I take already cut paper and submerge it in the tea...if I want lighter color, no heat is included, but if wanting really strong color, then I warm the tea solution along with the paper in it, until I'm satisfied with color. In general, heating over two minutes can damage paper, so that's the top. Once I acquired color, paper is carefully pulled out with tweezers (no fingers, as damage easily occur at this point) spread on the tissue paper and dry for some five minutes and then remove it (so it wouldn't stick to it) on the fine sponge covered wooden board I designed specially for the process ;)

If I plan to draw on it with ink, a drop or two of PVA is added to the tea, but only to the cold one, as heated one tends to turn into sort of strings once cooled. Success of heated process depends of the type of paper and some papers can't be dyed in this way, as they would fall apart.

Hope it helps ^^

This is absolutely incredible. This sounds kind of dumb, but is the book actually functional? Like, can you open/close it? How on earth did you bind those pages?

:) It doesn't sounds dumb, there's plenty of books out there that "look" like books, but are not functional, so of course you want to know...yes, it's fully functional, opens/closes, all pages flippable...all my books are fully functional, even those under 5mm...my hobby is miniature bookbinding ^^
